Frequently Asked Questions

Search and rescue canine work often raises questions about training, certification, and how teams are deployed. Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about the SARVAC Canine Program and how canine teams prepare to support search and rescue operations across Canada.

What is SARVAC canine certification?

SARVAC canine certification confirms that a search and rescue canine team has met national standards and is prepared to assist in search and rescue operations across Canada.

What does certification allow a canine team to do?

Certified teams may be deployed to assist with search and rescue operations, depending on the needs of the agency responsible for the search.ì

How is SARVAC certification different from other programs?

SARVAC certification helps ensure canine teams meet consistent national standards and that handlers are active members of recognized search and rescue organizations.

Can any dog become a search and rescue dog?

Not every dog is suited for SAR work. Successful SAR dogs are confident, highly motivated, comfortable in new environments, and enjoy searching using their sense of smell.

What breeds make good search and rescue dogs?

Many successful SAR dogs come from herding, sporting, or working breed groups, but temperament, drive, and the partnership between the dog and handler are most important.

How long does it take to train a search and rescue dog?

Training timelines vary, but most teams train for at least a year or more before they are ready for certification.

How do I get involved in SAR canine work?

Most handlers begin by joining a local search and rescue organization, gaining operational experience, and training with their canine before pursuing certification.

How do I know if my canine team is ready for evaluation?

Provincial or territorial SARVAC canine contacts may arrange pre-evaluation testing to confirm that the team meets the required prerequisites.

How do I apply for a SARVAC evaluation?

Handlers must submit an application through SARVAC once the required training and prerequisites have been completed.

When are evaluations held?

Evaluation dates and locations are published on the SARVAC website at least three months in advance.

Can I reward my dog during an evaluation?

Handlers may use verbal praise during the evaluation. Food or toy rewards can be given once the evaluation is complete.

Can another handler work my certified dog?

No. Certification applies only to the specific handler and canine team that completed the evaluation.

Can I deploy my dog before certification?

No. Canine teams must be certified before being deployed in SARVAC-supported operations.

Who decides when a canine team is deployed?

Deployment is determined by the Agency Having Jurisdiction, based on operational needs and the team’s certification profile.

What happens if an evaluation cannot be completed?

Evaluations may be postponed or cancelled if weather, safety concerns, or other conditions make it unsafe to proceed.
